CHILD MARRIAGE IN AMERICA - UNTOLD TRUTH

When we say "child marriage", we think of India, or Africa or other developing countries. But, more than 200,000 minors were married in the USA between 2000 and 2015. There is no federal law regarding child marriage. Every state sets its rule. This happens because of either parental religious beliefs or predatory adults. Marrying very young places women in a unique social, educational and economical injustice. Girls under 18 years old are twice likely to die in childbirth. Still majority of states issue marriage licenses to teenagers as young as 16. (some states allow as low as 14 years age with some parental consent). Good news is, Delaware and New Jersey became the first states to outlaw marriage for anyone under the age of 18, with no exceptions as recently as 2018.
