With fall approaching public health officials, school districts, and parents have difficult decisions to make regarding the safe reopening of schools for in person instruction. Some states, for example, Florida has announced that school, specifically in Miami and Broward counties students will not return for in person instruction until at least October. They will begin the school year with virtual instruction. In some towns in Massachusetts they have announced plans to reopen with many changes. Some of them include: All teachers and staff wearing masks/face shields, students in second grade or higher wearing masks/face shields, desk to be six feet apart, breaking up classroom sizes by groups that rotate attending in person instruction two days a week, no group activities, increased sanitation of school facilities, and even outdoor tents for instruction. Sates will be faced with extraordinary fiscal challenges to meet these demands. Many parents remain hesitant to send their children to school for fear of them becoming infected. Another sentiment from parents is that the "new normal" school set up for children seems difficult for them to adjust to. The American Academy of Pediatrics does recommend for children to get back to in person instruction (of course safely). There has been evidence to support that especially younger children do not thrive with virtual learning and are at increased risk for falling behind. Yet another discussion is the safety of teachers and school staff when reopening. What are your thoughts about schools reopening in the fall during the COVID-19 pandemic?
