NATIONAL OBESITY CRISIS - COST EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SUGAR TAX

Nachiket Mor, ex Country director for India - the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation writes that We in India are on the cusp of a national obesity crisis of the kind that has already swept through much of the developed world. Now would be a good time to start a debate on strategies to dramatically reduce the consumption of sugar in our diets.

While the focus of taxation policy in much of the developed world is on mass-marketed processed foods, which have the ability to bypass satiety signals, for us the problems may be much more widely prevalent, in the jalebi, sweet-lassi, too-much-sugar-in-the-tea, phenomena.
